The twig pot is a project that emphasizes proper proportion and symmetry along with the skills it takes to create it. In the twig pot video, you’ll learn how to incorporate a series of “ogee” curves to create an overall symmetrical look that’s nicely shaped and pleasing to look at.
In this video, you’ll see how to properly use the spindle gouge, roughing gouge, skew chisel, and parting tool. Drilling the hole for the glass vial with a No. 2 MT drill bit, creating a tapered neck, and installing the vial are also covered.

What height should your tool rest be when using a skew chisel? A little above standard tool rest height?
If you are using your skew as a scraper you want it at the center line. If you are using it as a cutting tool you want it a little above center.
Nicely done, well explained tutorial! I enjoyed this “ classroom”! Lol!
All excellent except: Sanding without a mask?
To be heard on the video Kirk can’t wear a mask. It’s an unfortunate necessity when filming – though we do have dust collection running in the studio.
I’ve learned a lot from your videos. Thank you.
Excellent video and a great teacher. Learnt a lot of new stuff. Thank you
Excellent! I made a vase with a slightly different form factor out of walnut using the techniques and products from your video. I wish I could add a picture.
A lovely vase, and very succinct description at every stage of the turning. Thank you.
(I know that PPE and dust extraction are distracting, but I would be happier if you used an extractor when sanding.)
Great video. Great teacher. What size are the glass tubes? Amazon?
That was the smaller of the vase tubes that we sell (3/4″ diameter). See them here:
